Land of the Lost

The neffie is a BIG dino fan, so we took him to see it yesterday.

Starring: Will Ferrell, Anna Friel, Danny McBride, Jorma Taccone, John Boylan and Matt Lauer.

Directed by: Brad Silberling.

Advisory: coarse and sexual language, violence

Running time: 102 minutes

This was a movie loosely based on the original TV series Land of the Lost — the 1970s Saturday morning cult series from Sid and Marty Krofft — about a father and his two kids who descend into a primeval world, complete with lizard people, furry, monkey-like creatures and one stiff-looking T-Rex.

In this version only the names remain unchanged, with Ferrell as Dr. Rick Marshall, a "quantum paleontologist" who waste billions of tax payer dollars according to Matt Lauer. Holly, banned Cambridge doctoral student, who prods Marshall to revisit his research. And Will, goofy tour guide type, who apparently is just along for the ride. Yep you read right - they are not related.

Then they get sucked through a roller-coaster-like time warp and lands in the middle of a parallel dimension inhabited by all sorts of odd creatures - the ape-like Chaka, who speaks in guttural grunts (and yet Holly can translate perfectly), the hostile T-Rex that takes an instant dislike to Dr Marshall - hmmm that could be because of all the "funny" comments being made, and of course the lizard people Sleestak.

There's alot of adult type gags in the movie that are not in keeping with the family humor genre it's being advertised as, but I for one found it to be humorous - with several laugh out loud moments. Then again - I go to the movies to be entertained - not to trash the film makers for producing the movie.

The important thing Lucas enjoyed it. From the bad T-Rex to the yummy steamed pinchy to the Good T-Rex at the end of the movie. He laughed and smiled and told Grandpa all about it over lunch. Isn't that what a movie is supposed to do? Make you laugh and want to share? I think so, so in that case - this movie is a hit.
