Great Rite

[This is the authentic Great Rite. If you are offended by sexuality, do not read this. This is only to be performed by adults.]

Preparation: the chalice should be filled with wine. A veil of at least a yard square is needed preferably of a Goddess color such as blue, green, silver, or white.
The Coven, except for the High Priestess and High Priest, arrange themselves around the perimeter of the circle, man and woman alternately as far as possible, facing the center.

The High Priestess and High Priest stand facing each other in the center of the circle, she with her back to the altar, he with his back to the South.
The High Priest kneels before the High Priestess and gives her the Five Fold Kiss; that is, he kisses her on both feet, both knees, womb, both breasts, and the lips, starting with the right of each pair. he says, as he does this:
"Blessed be thy feet, that have brought thee in these ways. Blessed be thy knees, that shall kneel at the sacred altar.Blessed be thy womb, without which we would not be.Blessed be thy breasts, formed in beauty.Blessed be thy lips, that shall utter the Sacred Names."
For the kiss on the lips, they embrace, length-to-length, with their feet touching each others. When he reaches the womb, she spreads her arms wide, and the same after the kiss on the lips.
The High Priestess then lays herself down, face upwards, with her arms and legs outstretched to form the Pentagram.
The High Priest fetches the veil and spreads it over the High Priestess's body, covering her from breasts to knees. He then kneels facing her, with his knees between her feet.
The High Priest delivers the invocation:
"Assist me to erect the ancient altar, at which in days past all worshipped; The altar of all things. For in old time, Woman was the altar. Thus was the altar made and placed,And the sacred place was the point within the center of the Circle. As we have of old been taught that the point within the center is the origin of all things,Therefore should we adore it;Therefore whom we adore we also invoke.O Circle of Stars,Whereof our father is but the younger brother,Marvel beyond imagination, soul of infinite space,Before whom time is ashamed, the mind bewildered, and the understanding dark,Not unto thee may we attain unless thine image be love. Therefore by seed and stem, root and bud,And leaf and flower and fruit do we invoke thee,O Queen of Space, O Jewel of Light,Continuous on of the heavens;Let it be ever thusThat men speak not of thee as One, but as None; And let them not speak of thee at all, since thou art continuous. For thou art the point within the Circle, which we adore; The point of life, without which we would not be.And in this way truly are erected the holy twin pillars; In beauty and strength were they erectedTo the wonder and glory of all men."
The Maiden fetches her athame from the altar and ritually opens a gate way in the Circle. The Coven file through and leave the room. The Maiden is the last one through and reseals the Circle. The High Priest removes the veil from the High Priestess's body.
The High Priestess rises and kneels facing the High Priest. The High Priest continues the invocation:
"Altar of mysteries manifold,The sacred Circle's secret pointThus do I sign thee as of old,With kisses of my lips anoint."
The High Priest kisses the High Priestess on the lips, and continues:
"Open for me the secret way,The pathway of intelligence,Beyond the gates of night and day,Beyond the bounds of time and sense.Behold the mystery arightThe five true points of fellowship""Here where Lance and Grail unite,And feet, and knees, and breast, and lip."
The High Priest and High Priestess now have intercourse. This is a private matter between them and none of the Coven can question them about it. When they are done, one of them ritually opens the Circle and calls the rest of the Coven. When they are back in the Circle, it is again sealed. The wine is now consecrated.
A male witch kneels in front of the altar before a female witch. He holds up a chalice of wine and she holds her athame point down and lowers the athame into the wine. The man says:
"As the athame is to the male, so the cup is to the female; and conjoined, they become one in truth."
The woman lays down her athame on the altar and kisses the man who remains kneeling and she accepts the chalice from him. She sips the wine, kisses him again and he sips, rises, and gives it to another woman with a kiss. The chalice is passed around the Coven, man to woman, with a kiss each time, until the entire Coven has sipped the wine. The chalice can be refilled and any one can drink from it without repeating the ritual once the chalice has gone around once.
To consecrate the cakes, the woman picks up her athame, and the man, kneeling before her, holds up the dish. The woman draws the Invoking Pentacle of Earth in the air above the plate while the man says:
"O Queen most secret, bless this food into our bodies; bestowing health, wealth, strength, joy and peace, and that fulfillment of love that is perfect happiness."
The woman lays down her athame and passes the cakes to the man with a kiss, he passes them back with a kiss and they are passed around the Coven the same way the wine was. Be sure to save some of the wine and some cake for an offering to the Earth and the Little Folk. After the meeting, leave the offering outside of the house if working indoors, or behind in the woods or field, when you leave if you are working outdoors.

Greetings Quarter Call

I greet the East, direction of Air:
Gentle breezes and strong winds,
Realm of the beauty of clouds and birds,
Bearer of the weather that touches us all,
The breath of life I inhale and exhale.
I am a part of all around me.

I greet the South, direction of Fire:
Candle flame, bonfire, starlight, and sunlight,
The energy that warms me and gives life to the world I inhabit,
The energy that pulses along my nerves.
I am a part of all around me.

I greet the West, direction of Water:
Rain, snow, rivers, and lakes,
The great encircling ocean from which all life first came,
The blood which flows through my veins still bearing the saltiness
of that original home.
I am a part of all around me.

I greet the North, direction of Earth:
Metal and stone, hill, and valley,
Mother who bears and nourishes all life--root and leaf,
Fur and feather and scale and skin,
Muscle and bone and brain cell.
I am a part of all around me.

Charge of the God

Listen to the words of the Great Father, who of old was called: Osiris, Adonis, Zeus, Thor, Pan, Cernunnos, Herne, Lugh and by many other names.

My law is harmony with all things.
Mine is the secret that opens the gates of life and mine is the dish of salt of the earth that is the body of Cernunnos that is the eternal circle of rebirth.

I give the knowledge of life everlasting, and beyond death I give the promise of regeneration and renewal.

I am the sacrifice, the father of all things, and my protection blankets the earth.
Hear the words of the dancing God, the music of whose laughter stirs the winds, whose voice calls the seasons.

I who am the Lord of the Hunt and the Power of the Light, sun among the clouds and the secret of the flame.

I call unto your bodies to arise and come unto me.

For I am the flesh of the earth and all its beings.

Thru me all things must die and with me are reborn.

Let my worship be in the body that sings, for behold all acts of willing sacrifice are my rituals.

Let there be desire and fear, anger and weakness, joy and peace, awe and longing within you.

For these too are part of the mysteries found within yourself, within me, all beginnings have endings all endings have beginnings.

For those who are not of wicca or a witch, and do not know what is meant by 'willing sacrifice" I feel compelled to explain it so you will not confuse it with some sort of blood sacrifice.

A sacrifice is giving up something of yours in return for some greater good. We do not own animals, therefor they would not be ours to sacrifice. No matter what relationship you have with another person you never own them, therefor they are not yours to sacrifice.

Any blood sacrifice is not a true sacriice, and since we value all life and consider all living creatures as divine, withches never sacrifice any living creature.

Anyone who does this and claims to be a witch is either a liar or seriously misled and in great need of counseling.

Three Fold Law

"May whatever ye do, Come back to the,
Three times bad, or three times good"

Three-Fold Law, or Law of Return as it is also called, is perhaps one of the more controversial aspects of Wiccan ethics. The basic premise is that anything we do comes back to us in the end, often to a greater degree (such as three-fold). If we do good, then good will be retuned and if we cause harm, we put ourselves in danger of harm.

This relates a lot towards KarmaIn that ethically it is equivalent to the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have done to you". But in the case of the Law of Return, there is a literal reward or punishment tied to one's actions, particularly when it comes to working magic.
The debate over the validity of the Law of Return and its variations takes many forms. Some feel that it was created to keep new initiates in check as they learned to work with magic, while others feel it is a remnant of Christian thinking, being that a majority of Wiccans come from a Christian background. However, many Wiccans today, including some authors and "community leaders", take the three-fold law quite literally.

Since the idea that "we reap what we sow" is generally accepted among Wiccans, the Law of Return can fairly be considered a core belief. However, it must be acknowledged that it is neither a necessary nor a universally defining belief of the Craft. There are many Wiccans, experienced and new alike, who view the Law of Return as an over-elaboration on the Wiccan Rede, which recommends that we refrain from causing harm. A Wiccan would not wish to cause harm since he or she deems it wrong to do so, not out of fear of retribution.

Doreen Valiente, one of the most influential and respected figures in modern witchcraft, boldly stated in her speech at the National Conference of the Pagan Federation in November 1997:

Another teaching of Gerald's which I have come to question is the belief known popularly as "the Law of Three". This tells us that whatever you send out in witchcraft you get back threefold, for good or ill.
Well, I don't believe it! Why should we believe that there is a special Law of Karma that applies only to witches? For Goddess' sake do we really kid ourselves that we are that important? Yet I am told, many people, especially in the USA, take this as an article of faith. I have never seen it in any of the old books of magic, and I think Gerald invented it.

While researching the Three-Fold Law, I took the liberty of writing several early authors who had referenced it in their books. The few responses I received were always the same; they did not know where it came from but it was known, at least as oral tradition, when they entered the craft. Using the dates of their initiations I hoped to at least obtain a starting point for my research. In this case, since Raymond Buckland was the first to be initiated of those authors who took the time to respond, I had a start date of 1963. Buckland was initiated as a Gardnerian by Lady Olwen, Gerald Gardner's last High Priestess before his death in 1964. Although Buckland recalled that Lady Olwen's coven referred to the three-fold law, he did not recall any mention of it by Gardner himself in their correspondences. I also knew from Margot Adler, that it was known in the US, at least orally when she entered the craft in 1972. "I know it was talked about the minute I entered the craft in the Brooklyn Pagan Way, and that was 72, but whether it came in written or oral form, I don't know." The Brooklyn Pagan Way was run by the New York Coven of Welsh Traditional Witches so the Law of Return had already disseminated outside of Gardnerian practice by 1972.
Starting with books in the 60's, I sought to find any reference to the Three-Fold Law or variations of that theme. I was particularly interested in finding non-Gardnerian sources since, unlike many other aspects of modern Wicca, the Three-Fold Law appears to be a purely Wiccan construct particularly of Gardnerian lineage, adding a moral element to the practice of magic. I then worked backward seeking earlier influences, as well as forward, seeing who referenced these early books in their bibliographies.

Charge of the Goddess

Listen to the words of the Great Goddess, who in ancient times was named: Artemis, Diana, Astarte, Istar, Aphrodite, Venus, Cerridwen, the Morrigue, Freyja, the White Lady and many other names.
Whenever you have a need of My aid, assemble in a secret place at least once a month, especially at the Full Moon.
Know that My laws and love shall make you free, for no man can prevent your worship of Me in your mind and heart.
Listen well when you come into My presence, and I shall teach you of deep mysteries, ancient and powerful.
I require no sacrifices or pain of your bodies, for I am mother of all things, the creatress who made you out of My love, and the one who endures through time.
I am the one who is the beauty of the Earth, the green of growing things.
I am the White Moon whose light is full among the stars, soft upon the Earth.
From Me all things are born, to Me all things, in their season return.
Let my joyous worship be in your hearts, for all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.
You see me in the love of man and woman, the love of parent and child, the love of humans to all My creatures.
When you create with your hand, I am there.
I blow the breath of life into the seeds you plant, whether of plant or child.
Always I stand beside you, whispering soft words of wisdom and guidance. All seekers of the Mysteries must come to Me, for I am the True Source, the Keeper of the Cauldron.
All who seek to know Me, know this,
All your seeking and yearning will avail you nothing unless you know the Mystery:
for if what you seek you find not within, you will never find it without.
For behold, I have been with you from the beginning and I will gather you to My breast at the end of your earthly existence .

Why Sacred Space?

There is a reason for the phrasing of the above piece. When you cast a circle you are in fact no longer in this world entirely. You are also not in the astral world entirely. You actually are in between the two. If you think of it this is a really marvelous thing, the fact that you can carve out a bit of space to perform your ritual between the existence that we know and the next. Think of it! What could be more fantastic than that realisation? The cold blue flame streaming from your athame is serving as a barrier to both worlds and allowing you to exist in both and neither at the same time.

When you are inside the circle you are in sacred space. If you have ever been in one you know this. Some people are able to see the walls of the circle and the world beyond appears misty or etherial. Some simply sense the change in the space as the circle is formed without seeing any difference. If you have not had this experience yet, you will. As you develop your abilities to visualise, concentrate and open your senses you will more than likely come to a place where the difference will be apparent to you. Even if it is not, you must know that there is a difference. The circle is real, the walls are there, concentrating the power within them until it is released as a fully formed energy form to the universe.

The circle is a powerful thing if you make it one. Casting a circle is a skill that you develop with practice. Your abilities will increase with time and the circles you cast will be stronger and more powerful than the first ones you began casting as a beginner. Wicca is different in their view of the circle than ritual magic is. In some schools of ceremonial magic the circle is there for protection as well as a sacred space. To keep the entities you conjure at bay. In Wicca the circle serves as both a sacred space and as a concentrator for the power you raise within it, preventing it from dispersing prematurely and allowing you to build the energy to a maximum before releasing it to produce your ritual intent. This function is refered to as raising the cone of power by many.

If a church may be loosely defined as a space where the faithful go to communicate with their deity, to pray and perform rituals in the honor of the deity, then the circle is a church. It is where you go to conduct rituals thanking your deities for the blessings you have received and expect to receive in the future. It is where you go to conduct magic to achieve the results that you require in time of need. It is the space where you can most effectively communicate with your deities at times of the year considered sacred such as sabbats.

Cakes & Ale 2

Take the drink-filled chalice in left hand and athame in right. Slowly lower athame into chalice, saying:
"As the athame is to the male, so the chalice is to the female;
And conjoined, they become one in truth.
Let the fruits of union promote life.
Let all be fruitful and let wealth be spread throughout the lands."

Take a sip of the drink.
Hold the plate of cakes in left hand and athame in right. Draw an invoking Earth pentagram over the cakes, saying:
"Oh gracious Lord and Lady of abundance,
Bless these cakes and infuse them with Your love,
Bestowing health, strength, joy and peace."

Traditional Circle Cast w/Quarter Calls

On your altar, you will need a bell, an athame, a red candle, a chalice, a pentacle, a small bowl or jar of salt, a small bowl of water, and symbols for the God and Goddess (statues/candles/items from nature, etc).

Light the red candle and incense.
Ring the bell three times, then say:
"Let it be known the circle is about to be cast."

Beginning in the east, walking deosil, draw a circle around your available work space with the athame, saying:
"Here is the boundary of the circle of power
A protection that shall contain the power raised herein
Naught but love shall enter in
Naught but love shall emerge from within."

Lower the tip of the athame into the water, saying:
"As water is life's beginning
So salt is its end."

Scoop three pinches salt into the water with the athame and stir deosil, saying:
"Combined, they bring forth new life."

Draw a circle with the Holy Water, tracing the same circle you drew before with the athame. Then draw the circle with the incense, then the red candle.

Anoint yourself with Holy Water at the third eye, lips, throat, heart, feet, saying:
"I consecrate myself, [magickal name], in the names of the God and the Goddess."

Move to the East, and with the athame, draw an invoking Air pentagram, saying:
"Hail, forces of the East, powers of Air.
Golden eagle of the dawn,
Rising sun, Come.
By the air that is His breath,
Send forth Your light, Be here now."

Kiss the blade of athame. Then move to the South, and draw an invoking Fire pentagram, saying:
"Hail, forces of the South, powers of Fire.
Red lion of the noon heat,
Sparks of life, Come.
By the fire that is His spirit,
Send forth Your flame, Be here now."

Kiss the blade of athame. Then move to the West, and draw an invoking Water pentagram, saying:
"Hail, forces of the West, powers of Water.
Blue dolphin of dusk,
Ocean waves, Come.
By the waters of Her living womb,
Send forth Your flow, Be here now."

Kiss the blade of athame. Then move to the North, and draw an invoking Earth pentagram, saying:
"Hail, forces of the North, powers of Earth.
Black bull of midnight,
Fertile field, Come.
By the earth that is Her body,
Send forth Your strength, Be here now."

Kiss the blade of athame and return to the altar. Raising your athame high in salute, say:
"From cave and desert, sea and hill,
By incense, blade, cup, and pentacle,
All hail the Four Quarters!"

Assume the Goddess position and say:
"Crescent One of the starry skies
Flowered One of the fertile plain
Flowing One of the ocean's rolls
Blessed One of the gentle rains
Gracious Goddess, descend I ask,
Be with me in my sacred rite."

Assume the God position and say:
"Horned One of the wilderness
Winged One of the deep blue skies
Rayed One of the splendorous sun
Fallen One of the Samhain cries
Glorious God, descend I ask,
Be with me in my sacred rite."

Return to normal standing position and say:
"May the powers of the One
The source of all creation;
May the Goddess, Lady of the Moon,
And the God, Hunter of the Sun;
May the powers of the creative forces,
Rulers of the elemental realms;
May the powers of the stars above and the earth below
Bless this place, and this time, and I who am with You."

Ring the bell three times then say:
"The circle is now cast
I am between the worlds
Beyond the boundaries of time
Where night and day,
Birth and death,
Joy and sorrow,
Meet as One."

***********closing************

Ring the bell three times, then say:
"As I came in love and friendship, I leave the same way.
Let me spread the love outward to all;
Sharing it with those I meet."

Go to the North. With the athame, draw a banishing Earth pentagram and say:
"Powers of the North, thank you for your time.
Empower my magick with solid foundations
So that it may grow daily in my heart. Farewell."

Move to the West, draw a banishing Water pentagram and say:
"Powers of the West, thank you for your time.
Empower my magick with inspiration
So that it flows freely in and around my life. Farewell."

Move to the South, draw a banishing Fire pentagram and say:
"Powers of the South, thank you for your time.
Empower my magick with passionate energy
As a source of encouragement in my heart. Farewell."

Move to the East, draw a banishing Air pentagram and say:
"Powers of the East, thank you for your time.
Empower my magick with your creative winds
So that it may ever be a source of hope in my life. Farewell."

Return to the altar. Raise the athame high in salute and say:
"Goddess and God,
I thank You for Your presence,
For light and love, for night and change.
Merry did I come here and Merry do I part,
To merry come again.
Let me honor You and be guided by You
In all matters.
Hail and farewell! Blessed be."

Kiss the blade of the athame and say:
"The circle is now open, but never unbroken."

I conjure thee o circle of power that thou become our sacred space.

The power that we shall raise within thee.
Wherefore do I consecrate thee
