Book: Fifty Shades of Grey

E L James
Romance (BDSM)
The Writer’s Coffee Shop / 2011
Paper Back / 514 Pages
Series Fifty Shades #1

When literature student Anastasia Steele is drafted to interview the successful young entrepreneur Christian Grey for her campus magazine, she finds him attractive, enigmatic and intimidating. Convinced their meeting went badly, she tries to put Grey out of her mind - until he happens to turn up at the out-of-town hardware store where she works part-time.

The unworldly, innocent Ana is shocked to realize she wants this man, and when he warns her to keep her distance it only makes her more desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her - but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey's singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving adoptive family – Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a passionate, physical and daring affair, Ana learns more about her own dark desires, as well as the Christian Grey hidden away from public scrutiny.

Can their relationship transcend physical passion? Will Ana find it in herself to submit to the self-indulgent Master? And if she does, will she still love what she finds?

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

What I liked the Most? The contract & negotiations

What I liked the Least? The characters

Review: I saw all the hype about this book and I said hey why not try it. I wish now that I could go back in time & scratch my eyes out. There are not many books out there that I truly wish had never been written, but now I will add another (3) to that list. This book was truly horrible. The writing is insipid at its best and utterly juvenile the rest of the time. The characters are so unbelievable that you disconnect from them immediately.

The only positive thing that I saw was the upfront aspect of the contract (and I’ve seen tons of people bashing that part) but it made me realize that when engaging in any relationship it would be sooooo much easier to sit down and write out a contract of what you expect from that relationship. IE, a contract between best friends might include lunch one day a month, a one hour phone call a week, and text messages (emails) every day. LOL. Start dating someone new, contract for at least 3 months, he will open all doors for you while together, take you out to dinner & a movie, buy flowers on the monthly anniversary of your first date. Could you just imagine the world if that were the case.

Series That Old Black Magic #1

Something dead this way comes-
That Old Black Magic, Book 1
For ten long years Griffin Trudeau has managed to keep his paws off Jemma Finnegan, best friend and leading star of his kinkiest fantasies. As her appointed cat familiar, indulging those fantasies with the delectable witch is strictly forbidden. But when Jemma shows up at his door with seduction in mind, control goes right out the window.
Too late he realizes making love to Jemma is the trigger that launches a zombie apocalypse.
Jemma's been dealt a double whammy: she's just discovered she's a witch. And Griff has been hiding whiskers and a tail. Oh, and if her life wasn't crazy enough, a dead voodoo queen needs her blood to raise a legion of zombies.
There's one plan that might work to increase Jemma's powers so she can put an end to the looming holocaust. A sexy threesome with Griff and Logan Scott, a werewolf familiar with a history of rubbing Griff's fur the wrong way. A cat and a wolf playing nice, much less sharing? It'll take a miracle.
Warning: A witch, tiger and wolf doing naughty things. A dead voodoo queen doing evil things. And zombies doing zombie things. Get your shovels ready.

I picked this book up because The cover looked interesting

What I liked the Most? The concept behind the story

What I liked the Least? At least have the decency to label it erotica

Review: I enjoyed the concept of the story & would have liked to read more of the background less sex. Yes I know – I’m not usually prudish when it comes to sex in the book, but this one just felt like the sexual scenes (as hot as they were) were only there to pad the story. A lot of the flirtatious comments could have been left out and there could have been more non sexual story. I guess it’s because I got excited about the witch/voodoo/shifter/zombie combo and forgot to read the rest of the blurb, but this one came at me out of left field.

Recommended to: ONLY fans of twisted erotic – M/F/M action

After tonight, Ryan knows he'll never be satisfied with just one taste.
Could his fantasy lead to something lasting, or will it only be one night of pleasure?

I picked this book up because I was looking for holiday fiction – didn’t read the blurb and got an erotic holiday story
What I liked the Most? The way the sex scenes were handled

What I liked the Least? Too Short – only took me 30 mins to read

Review: I’ve got a very mixed feeling from this book. It was too heavy on sex to be a good romance and too heavy on romance to be good erotica. There’s no left over questions, no desire to continue the story, just the ending. It’s a fun naughty little read.

I did have a few ick moments when Ryan would do something sexual and then think “my mom would like her”.

Recommended to: Fans of erotica – but with a warning attached – do not read if you do not like M/F/M action.

What I liked the Most? The fact that it continues the first story without being wrapped up in them

What I liked the Least?

Review:As far as erotica goes, this is fairly well done. There is a plot, decent characterization, and more than just sex scenes. I must say I’m a little put off by the fact that the hero keeps being described as such a huge man. Really? What happened to the sweet guy next door type. Muscles may be the selling point for some women but for my taste it just makes a man too hard.

Recommended to:I would not recommend this book to those faint of heart about erotica because it is quite graphic.

Or can she find the courage to explore her nascent sensuality with this man who so obviously wants to teach her?

What I liked the Most? The poolside scene

What I liked the Least? The romance was a little to “pat” for my taste

Review: OMG – this book is almost too hot for words – from the opening party to the end of the story, but it was a sweet love/finding yourself story. Just do not read it if you are at all prudish (Hey Theresa not your type of book!!!).

I enjoyed the fact that the recent divorcee found out that she is not a fridge cow and in fact is a beautiful sexual woman AND then reclaimed herself from her mentally/sexually abusive ex.

I picked this book up because This was an accidental pick up – I thought I was getting Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon – I forgot who wrote the book. LOL.
What I liked the Most? OMG the sex scenes were hot!!!!

What I liked the Least? The way Chad was treated

Review: Yes it is a bit choppy but I enjoyed the read. It was quite graphic sexually so if you have any problems reading M/F scenes do not read this book. I adored the concept of the Guardian falling in love with a Dreamer, but it does kinda remind me of the Bodyguard and countless other stories about the “forbidden love”.

The characters are a little bland, but they do have the potential to get spicey and the book is a total cliffhanger. All in all it was a good read for a pick up mistake.

Recommended to: I would not recommend this book to those faint of heart about erotica because it is quite graphic.

Best Quote: “In my dream, this is our home,” he said softly, his gaze moving across her like a tactile caress. “We wake up early every morning so we have time to make love. Slowly. My body covering yours, pushing deep inside yours, as if we have all the time in the world. We part reluctantly, kissing each other good-bye before leaving for work. We think about each other all day, and wait impatiently to be together again at night. We take vacations to private beaches where I watch you play in the surf, laughing, your skin a golden tan. I strip you there on a blanket. Push your suit aside and sink my cock into you. Ride you until you can’t take any more. Then I carry you inside and take you again. We share meals together, trials together, life together.”

But these guys just don’t take no for an answer, hmmmm, wouldn’t that be called rape or stalking her in the real world? But the sex scenes were uber hot and I loved the danger in the story – just one more reason for the characters to be together. I liked Sax’s protective streak, he really cares for Marey and he showed how in a lot of little ways.

What I liked the Most? I loved the inheritance blackmail issue – wonderful!!!

What I liked the Least? I just couldn’t get into this one – maybe it was the characters

Review: This installment to this series had the most complete story line, but by far not my favorite couple – I mean I liked Kimberly and Jared well enough, but I've loved other characters more.

Story line this was perfect – Kimberly (daughter to a prude of a man) must remain a virgin until she marries a man approved of by “The Prude” – or no inheritance from the dearly departed mother. To enforce this stipulation, she is made to submit to physical examinations by doctor every three months to determine that the hymen is still intact. Her counter get admitted to “The Club”.

Sexually it may be just tamer than some of the other books. It doesn't seem to quite go as all out as some of the others.

Review:Now this was an interesting story which I personally think had more depth than the previous two, more character development, and motivation exploration. While I think more could have been done to make the story better – it was a good read.

There were issues which were never addressed - Terrie believing Jesse wanted a more dominant, less submissive bed partner and Jesse thinking Terrie couldn’t handle him sexually – that were never addressed. I loved Terrie plotting to subdue Jesse and bringing in another woman. Great idea there – I just wish that scene had gone further. But my favorite was the under the desk blowjob! Leigh did a good job of making this book different from the first too.

She's heard the rumors for years, the tales of his sexual preferences. She's prepared herself to accept his desires. Prepared her body for his touch. But she wasn't prepared for the choice to come... A secret that has scarred the bond, the ability to be a brother or to accept the love of the men he was raised with. He knows the only way to prove his loyalty, his love for those brothers and Marly will be the key. She has a choice. She can surrender to Cade's needs, his soul deep desires, or she can walk away. A choice only Marly can make. A choice that will change her life forever.

I picked this book up because Full length smut = more sex

What I liked the Most? The domination theme & Sam (I might just skip to his book)

What I liked the Least? Lora Leigh’s obsession with anal sex

Review: Marly is a young woman – determined & stubborn – wanting who she wants no matter the cost involved. She wants Cade – domineering man with a tormented past and very strange sexual kinks involving his brothers (talk about dysfunction junction) – who realizes he can’t just take what he wants unless of course you say no. But come on now – I don’t care how tortured your past is – pushing a virgin to their knees in public and then having her go down on you and then you call her a whore as you walk away is not acceptable. Never. And then after the name calling and petty intimidating he tried she still went ahead and slept with him – in a hesitant and forced manor – it was like hey you’re a virgin? Sex toys, triple penetration, My BROTHERS?!?!?!

Counseling – I recommend counseling. All of the main characters – Cade, Marly, Brock, and Sam – are in need of some major therapy instead of hiding from their traumatic pasts and masking their emotional pain with intense sex.

I realize people want to freely engage in a ménage, then have a damn ménage, but the really the whole ‘I have to because I’m emotionally scarred’ and the demanding ‘my woman better accept my need to share her with my brothers or else because otherwise it means she really doesn’t love me’ thing is just silly and lame.

Recommended to: I'm not recommending this book, because I'm not sure if I liked it or not. I know parts of it were really icky, Cade pissed me off, Marly pissed me off, but I still want to read the next two books in the series, to see what the heck is going on. Does that mean I liked it, or that I'm a glutton for punishment?

Best Quote: “And trust me, boy, she has a damned fine figure, but that’s one woman you don’t want to tangle with. She has PMS every day of the damned week.”

What I liked the Least? The lack of story line & to be honest the quick end to the threesome

Review: This book is not for people who are too sexually inhibited and uptight, I read this knowing its genre and was prepared for what lay ahead.

While I really enjoyed the be free with your sexual desires – this story had some major stops in it: the freaky mother, the absent father, the “let me tell you about your fathers sex life” step mother, and of course the “it was good but I’m gone” best friend. This story had the potential to really be a good read & it fell short.

Fairyville - Emma Holly

Before I even get the recap let me first say - WOWSER!!!! Be forewarned: there are a lot of sex scenes, described in blunt language, featuring a variety of acts and permutations. You've got M/F, M/M and M/F/M. And man, it is hot!!! While established fans of this author are most likely already aware that Emma Holly's stories often contain such content, new fans that will pick up the book in their local bookstore will have no way of knowing by looking at the book. If they don't care for this kind of material, then the surprise may turn them off of Holly's work for good, even those titles that are strictly M/F. Okay now for the recap.
(Publisher)
Zoe Clare, a medium, has been in love with Magnus Monroe, her landlord and manager, for two years. He seems to like her very much, yet every full moon he spends the night with another woman, although that's a one-off and he doesn't see the woman again.

Alex Goodbody is visiting Fairyville because he was hired to look into whether a young boy, Oscar, is was swapped with a Changeling at birth. Alex had left Fairyville under a cloud after being discovered having sex with his football coach, but Zoe still loves him and his arrival in town rekindles some of her old feelings. To add to the complication, Alex came with his fellow private investigator, Bryan McCallum, with whom he's just started a sexual relationship. Bryan and Alex have worked together for ten years, and Bryan is deeply in love.

As soon as Alex and Bryan arrive in Fairyville, strange things begin to happen - rocks shower on them in a hotel room, angels are summoned by Zoe to rescue them, and a relative of Alex's speaks to him from beyond the grave. As soon as Zoe meets Alex again, some of their feelings come back, which leads to jealousy on Magnus's part and insecurity for Bryan.
(My Turn)
This was my first read by Emma Holly, but I will definitely read more (my husband wants to go out and buy every book ever written right NOW). She certainly proved able to juggle the demands of a satisfying erotic romance (providing the reader with good romance and great sex) and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any paranormal erotic romance fan. I found her style of writing to be quirky and well developed without being overly wordy. I keep going back to the word WOW.
